Cosmetics are an essential part of women’s daily beauty regimes but
sale of low quality makeup items and shampoos, soaps and perfumes by vendors on pushcarts in crowded bazaars is leaving harmful effects on skin and hair.
Not only shampoos but also many kinds of unbranded face powders, creams, perfumes, lipsticks and nail polishes are being prepared in Ganjmandi, Dhoke Hassu, Pirwadhai, Dhoke Mangtal, Dhoke Elahi Bakhsh, Tench Bhata, Rawat and some other localities, sources told ‘The News’ on Sunday.
Low quality homemade cosmetics, shampoos and perfumes are being openly sold in Bara Market, Moti Bazaar, Muslim Town, Sadiqabad, Chur Bazaar, Pirwadhai and Tench Bazaar, befooling poor customers who visit these bazaars in large numbers, especially on Sundays.
Some shopkeepers bring ‘expired’ cosmetics from Peshawar Bara Market at throwaway prices. “I am into this business for last thirteen years, but I don’t have a permanent place. I keep on travelling from Rawalpindi to Lahore, Multan, Faisalabad and Gujranwala to sell cosmetics, perfumes and shampoos,†Hayat Khan, a pushcart owner, told ‘The News’ on Sunday.
He said that he buys low quality cosmetics and toiletries from Peshawar Bara Market or different points in Rawalpindi at cheaper rates. He sells a large bottle of shampoo at Rs70 against the price of Rs195 of the branded one. Similarly, he sells cosmetics and perfumes at ‘reduced’ rates by affixing stickers of branded items.
Dr. Irfan Saeed told ‘The News’ that such kinds of low quality cosmetics not only destroy the freshness of the face but also cause some facial and hair diseases. Due to use of unbranded shampoos, thousands of young people have turned their hair grey in a short span of time with complete hair disappearance in some cases.
He said that people related to this business use different kinds of chemicals, which are not checked by any laboratory. He said that expired branded cosmetics, perfumes and shampoos are as dangerous as homemade ones. Customers should avoid purchasing such cosmetics and toiletries from bazaars at cheaper rates, he warned.
“Pimples and dark spots appeared on my face when I used a beauty cream bought from a shop in Bara Market for Rs20,†Shazia Wahab told ‘The News’ on Sunday. When she went to Bara Market a few days later to complain about the cream’s low quality, the shopkeeper wasn’t found anywhere.
