I am a Regional Director of a governmental agency in the State of Ohio. We conduct investigations and have high contact with the public. I have employees who have an issue with me prohibiting open toe shoes of any kind.
Here is a brief history: last summer I distributed our dress code policy and asked employees to be professional. We have a relaxed office compared to the other five regional offices in Ohio. On the central office dress code policy it states no open toe shoes. I let that go, but our employees began to wear plastic flip flop shoes to work– the 99 cent kind for the beach. I distributed the policy again and there was no change. This summer season began and I prohibited all open toe shoes.
I wanted to be more reasonable but when I looked at all the open toe shoes styles it was impossible to come up with a set of criteria that would be professional and without question. I do not want to go up and down the halls making judgment calls about the appropriateness of shoes.
