Clumps of trees ruffle the horizon that meets blue sky overlaid with white bubble clouds. Still ponds reflect the green landscape as a distant mower hums and freshly cut grass perfumes the air.
At this hour of the morning, the Prairie Arboretum on the edge of Freeman is devoid of people. Birds and insects are its only population.
The prairie oasis that was conceived, built and continues to be cared for by volunteers stands as a testimony to community pride and features blooming flowers, pebble paths, sculptures, bridges, an island and a fountain.
